ARTIST STATEMENT
"My art celebrates the indomitable spirit of Black Femme Women through a range of mediums, including vibrant portraits on canvas, digital illustrations, and afro-surrealist imagery. In my work, I explore the multifaceted nature of Blackness, incorporating the materiality and cosmic essence of Black pigment in intentional contrast to girlish colors to create textural illusions within my pieces. I use a combination of matte and glossy black paints, including one of the blackest acrylics from Japan, to create "voids" among the garish, audaciously feminine color fields. I also merge the digital and tangible, utilizing graphic design typography and animation alongside traditional painting and printmaking techniques. My latest series, "Loud Minds," delves into the rich, complex, and layered inner truth of Black femmes. As a neurodivergent Black woman, I draw from my personal experiences to capture the turbulent beauty of our diverse mentalities. Through intimate interviews and stunning portraits of fellow Black, neurodivergent women, I celebrate the intersections of Blackness, femininity, and neurodiversity. Through my work, I aim to bring joy and visibility to those who have been historically overlooked and undervalued." - Leeya Rose Jackson
