Emily Donovan is a Minnesota based artist who uses natural materials in her art and explores interactions in nature and the origins of color and pigments. She graduated from the University of Minnesota where she studied Visual Arts and Art History and is beginning her twelfth year of researching traditional methods in creating color from plant and animal based pigments and the cultural significance of these processes.   Donovan is a member of the Rice County Indigo Collective where she and other artists plant and farm Japanese Indigo for her artwork.  She is a recipient of the multiple Minnesota State Arts Board Grants and has completed several artist residencies in Europe and South America,  learning from local natural dyes experts. Emily regularly hosts artist demonstrations and volunteers in schools,  and loves teaching her process. She also enjoys collaborating and foraging materials with local gardeners and naturalists to learn more about native plants.  Donovan’s art can be found in several private and public collections internationally.
